Artist's Statement
I use photography to explore the dialogue between nature, history, and time. My work focuses on landscapes, ancient architecture, and the abstract designs found in the natural world. Through these subjects, I aim to reveal patterns of endurance and impermanence—the way environments hold memory, meaning, and stories that often go unnoticed.
I work primarily with large format black and white film cameras, a process that demands patience, precision, and presence. Because the image on the back of the camera is upside down and reversed, I first see abstract shapes and forms before pressing the shutter.
This encourages careful observation and allows subtle details and natural abstractions to emerge in ways that might otherwise go unnoticed. The deliberate pace of this method creates images that carry a sense of stillness and depth, while black and white emphasizes contrast, tonality, and texture.
When I do shoot in colour, the intention is the same, but the process is simpler—still focusing on light, form, and abstraction, yet without the extended technical setup that large format black and white requires.
The series, Platinum and Silver, reflects my interest in how place shapes experience and how nature creates its own forms of abstraction. By photographing landscapes, ancient structures, and patterns in the natural world, I aim to reveal the connections between human history and the enironments we inhabit, as well as the timeless beauty of natural design.
Ultimately, I hope my work invites viewers into a moment of contemplation—to pause and consider the elegance of ancient stone, the quiet rhythm of the landscape, and the intricate, often-overlooked designs that surround us in nature. Photography becomes a way to slow down, observe carefully, and honour both permanence and transformation in the world around us.
